Why do floating objects stick together?

Also known as the Cheerios Effect, why do floating objects stick together? Of course, there will be science involved to explain this phenomenon. When objects are attracted to each other, there is also an opposite reaction where objects would repel each other. With these push-pull forces in play, objects will float in a certain way – depending on their material and density. An example of this in nature are water striders that walk on water (check out our blog post about it here).
